Dream with Schumann’s beautiful Träumerei

Today’s #mindfulmonday invites us to take a moment out of our everyday… to #dream.

I’ve played Schumann’s magical Träumerei (Dreaming) for a long time. The most beloved and instantly recognisable of his Kinderszenen (Scenes from Childhood) suite, I not only remember playing it and loving it as a child, but so acutely and poignantly, how much my father loved it, how much pleasure it brought him. He would ask me for it.


I didn’t fully understand back then, as a child.
But now - as an adult - I do.

We lose the habit of taking a moment out of our everyday, and to gift ourselves a moment of #mindfulhedonism, and lose ourselves in reverie. Formless, free-ranging, beautiful.

This is dedicated to the living legend Martha Argerich, who inspired me to offer this from her unforgettable performance of Schumann’s Piano Concerto with the @rotterdamphilharmonic and their genius conductor @lahav.shani at the @deutschephilharmonieberlin on Tuesday.

As her encore, she gave us the first piece of Kinderszenen, “Of Foreign Lands and Places”. The transcendental simplicity with which she offered it was only matched by its profundity.
