Reading Is Not a Punishment!

In this age of recording of everything there has a been yet another viral video of a Black child being humiliated by his mother. The caption read POV: when you should've chose the a** whuppin instead of the punishment with a laughing emoji. This video with over a quarter of million views and over 200,000 shares, shows a little boy holding a book open and being yelled at by his mother to read the book. He's crying and commences to read the same line of the book. Then he stops to ask could he call his dad then, she yells again read the book! He then "reads" the same line from the book again while crying. In this episode of Real Reading Talk, I break down why videos like this once again shows the traumatic parenting styles that we have continued to use in the Black community in our quest for obedience and compliance from our children. In addition to that I address another important issue of how treating reading as a punishment actually contributes to our children growing up with a disdain for reading.
