No task is too great for the one you love — especially if you’re the hopeless romantic Don Quixote, hero of the eponymous novel by Miguel de Cervantes.
“Were you to tell me that you are wearied by a sky too studded with stars,” Don Quixote assures his beloved Dulcinea, “tearing the divine order asunder, I’d scythe the night with a single blow.”
Those words were put to music by French composer Maurice Ravel in his song “Chanson Romanesque,” part of his song cycle “Don Quichotte à Dulcinée.” And they are brought to life by bass-baritone Michael Sumuel, a performer who boasts a long history playing the character.
“One of the most memorable recitals I’ve been honored to perform occurred in grad school and ‘Don Quichotte’ was my focal point,” Michael recalls.
“The second half of the recital included two excerpts from Jules Massenet’s opera of the same name, ‘Chansons de Don Quichotte’ by Jacques Ibert, and ‘Don Quichotte à Dulcinée’ by Maurice Ravel.”
