Approximately two million of Ontario’s three million soybean acres go through the winter and spring with no cover. Soybeans are organic matter users, meaning that they burn more organic matter in a production year than they return to the soil. Seeding cereal rye after soybeans provides both ground cover and organic matter production. However, soybeans are often harvested too late and conditions are often not ideal to plant a good stand of cereal rye.
This session will explore broadcasting cereal rye into soybeans at the leaf drop stage as a solution to these challenges. Join Dr. Ian MacDonald, Crop Innovation Specialist Ag Dev. Branch, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, in cooperation with Salford Farm Equipment, as they demonstrate this technique using a spinner spreader and an air flow spreader.
