THE STORM'S END TAVERN

Sometimes winning costs more than losing. Sometimes the power to end wars is the same power that haunts you for the rest of your life.

Bjorn Stormcaller built this place with hands that once called lightning from the sky. Big guy, used to be a storm barbarian. Could summon thunder that shook mountains, lightning that split armies in half. Great power, until he used it to end the Ironhold War.

A Batalha de Ironhold was supposed to be the final push. Two armies bleeding each other dry for three years, and Bjorn was tired of watching good people die for bad reasons. So he called down the mother of all storms. Lightning everywhere. Thunder so loud it burst eardrums. Rain so heavy it turned the battlefield into a swamp.

War ended alright. Both armies got wiped out. Friends, enemies, didn't matter to the storm. Bjorn's own squad got caught in it - guys he'd fought beside for years, dead because he thought he could control something that big. Won the war by killing everyone, including the people he was trying to save.

Tonight, there's this dwarf in the corner who won't talk. Just stares at his empty mug. Mine collapsed on his crew last month. Tonight, old knight lady keeps cleaning the same piece of armor over and over. Hands won't stop shaking. Tonight, young cleric girl patches up everyone who comes through, but you can see it - she's trying to save people she already lost somewhere else. Most fucked up of all, there's a mage kid practicing the most basic spells, terrified his magic will kill someone again.

The Guilt Fire burns in the center of the room. Doesn't use wood. Burns your worst shit instead. Throw a bad memory in there and the flames change color. Blue if someone betrayed you, red if you're pissed, black if you're ashamed, white if you're just sad. People sit there feeding their crap to the fire. Doesn't fix anything, but it helps.

Above it all, the ceiling is just wood. Nothing fancy. No magic, no moving parts. After you've been the storm, you just want walls that keep the thunder out.

House drink is Recovery Rum. Tastes like shit when you first try it - all your baggage in liquid form. But the more you work through your problems, the less it burns. Old-timers say it almost tastes good now.

Real power isn't about how much you can destroy. It's knowing when to stop. Bjorn figured that out too late, but he figured it out. Now he serves drinks with the same hands that used to call storms. It's not much, but it's something.
