/i/ vs /ɪ/ Vowel Sounds - American English Listening and Pronunciation Practice

This video will help train your ear to hear the difference between the /i/ as in GREEN vowel sound and the /ɪ/ as in SILVER vowel sound. Listen carefully to each Minimal Pair and repeat the words aloud. (Minimal Pairs are two words that sound the same EXCEPT FOR one sound.)

The /i/ as in GREEN vowel sound is made with the lips slightly smiling, tense, and not rounded. The tongue is tense, high, and the sides of the tongue touch the inside of the back teeth.

The /ɪ/ as in SILVER vowel sound is created with the lips slightly parted and relaxed. The tongue is relaxed in a high position - but not as high as it is for the /i/ as in GREEN sound. The sides of the tongue touch the upper back teeth. When moving from the /i/ to the /ɪ/ sound, the jaw drops slightly and all tension in the lips is released.
