In this lecture, we discuss the 14 blessed martyrs of the Battle of Badr, the first major battle in Islamic history. A total of 6 Muhajirun and 8 Ansar gave their lives while defending the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the early Muslim community.

The 6 Muhajirun Martyrs
These were the companions who migrated from Makkah to Madinah, leaving their homes and wealth for the sake of Allah.
(1) Ubaydah ibn al-Harith (رضي الله عنه)
Tribe: Banu Muttalib bin Abd Manaf
One of the earliest Muslims
Fought in the first duel of Badr
Received a fatal wound while fighting against Utbah
Passed away at Al-Safra’ on the way back to Madinah
He was among the most respected elders of Quraysh
(2) Safwan ibn al-Bayda (رضي الله عنه)
Tribe: Quraysh – Banu Jumah
Among the earliest converts
Known for great modesty and piety
Martyred in battle during close combat
(3) Mihja‘ (رضي الله عنه)
Freed slave of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA)
Known as one of the first martyrs of the day
Remembered for bravery despite his humble background
(4) Harithah ibn Suraqah (رضي الله عنه)
Originally from the Khazraj tribe but counted among the migrant companions present at Badr
Martyred by an arrow shot from the enemy side
Famous story: His mother came to the Prophet ﷺ asking if her son was in Paradise, and Rasulullah ﷺ said: “He is in the highest gardens of Paradise.”
(5) Aqil ibn al-Bukayr (رضي الله عنه)
Tribe: Banu Sa’d ibn Layth
Migrated from Makkah
Brave warrior known for sincerity
Fell during intense combat
(6) Umair ibn Abi Waqas (رضي الله عنه)
Younger brother of Sa’d ibn Abi Waqas (RA)
Only 16 years old when martyred
One of the youngest martyrs of Badr
A symbol of youthful courage
The 8 Martyrs from the Ansar
These were the noble helpers from Madinah — 6 from Khazraj and 2 from Aws.

(7) Mubashshir ibn Abd al-Mundhir (رضي الله عنه)
Tribe: Aws – Banu Abd al-Ashhal
Known for wisdom and loyalty
Martyred in frontline battle
(8) Sa’d ibn Khaythamah (رضي الله عنه)
Tribe: Aws – Banu Amr ibn Awf
His father and he chose who would join Badr — he was selected
Fought courageously and attained martyrdom
From the Khazraj (6 Martyrs)
(9) Yazid ibn al-Harith (رضي الله عنه)
Tribe: Khazraj – Banu al-Najjar
Among early supporters of Islam in Madinah
Martyred in hand-to-hand combat
(10) Amr ibn al-Humam (رضي الله عنه)
Known for a famous moment:
When he heard the Prophet ﷺ promise Paradise, he said,
“Between me and Paradise is only to face these enemies,”
and jumped into battle.
Martyred heroically.
(11) Rafi‘ ibn al-Mu‘alla (رضي الله عنه)
Tribe: Khazraj – Banu Zurayq
A noble defender of Madinah
Fell while battling enemy cavalry
(12) Harithah ibn al-Nu‘man (رضي الله عنه)
Tribe: Khazraj – Banu Malik
Known for generosity and truthfulness
Martyred defending the Prophet ﷺ’s position
(13) ‘Aqil ibn al-Bukayr (different from the Muhajir one)
This one belonged to Khazraj
His bravery was widely praised
Martyred in the thick of battle
(14) Umair ibn al-Humam (رضي الله عنه)
Also a Khazraj warrior
Famous for saying:
“O Allah, I ask You only for Paradise.”
One of the last martyrs of the day.
