The US President made it to Japan for the G7 and held a meeting with Anthony Albanese, but is heading straight back to Washington to deal with the debt ceiling crisis in Congress – the latest hyper-partisan stand-off engulfing American politics.
The Sydney Quad summit was promptly cancelled, with a quick catch-up instead held on the sidelines of the G7.
At the same time, China is extending more olive branches. It's dropped sanctions on Australian timber and invited Anthony Albanese to visit Beijing.
