Sheila Haugh and Peter Blundell reflect on 'Unconditional Positive Regard'

Sheila Haugh
Sheila has worked as a counsellor/therapist, and supervisor for over 40 years. This has been in several settings, including the drugs and alcohol field; working with victims/survivors of domestic abuse and working with dying and bereaved people. She has maintained a private practice for most of this time and has worked in various organisational settings.
Sheila has worked as a senior lecturer in counselling and psychotherapy (Leeds Metropolitan University [now Leeds Beckett]), including programme leader for both the MA in Client-Centred Psychotherapy and MA in Psychological Therapies.
Sheila was a previous board member of the World Association for Person-Centered (sic) and Experiential Psychotherapy, as well as long-term Co-ordinator (Chair) of the British Association for the Person-Centred Approach where she received an Honourary Membership, in recognition of her services to the Association and the person-centred approach in Great Britain. Sheila has been a facilitator on several national and international person-centred encounter groups and meetings and presented at the Czech and Slovak Person-Centred Institutes’ international annual meetings.
Sheila has written many book chapters, and contributed to many person-centred texts over the years, and
Sheila is currently the Director of Studies for the Diploma/MSc Contemporary Person-Centred Psychotherapy and Applications at Metanoia Institute.

Sheila says “… my work has always been underpinned by the work of Carl Rogers, and those who have further developed his theory and practice. Whilst I have studied several other approaches, to a greater or lesser extent, it is the philosophy and values of the person-centred approach that guides and informs all my work”

Peter Blundell is the founder and co-lead of #TherapistsConnect. is a Senior Lecturer in Counselling/Psychotherapy at Liverpool John Moores University. Peter is a BACP and NCS registered person-centred/experiential counsellor/psychotherapist, he currently works in private practice in Liverpool and online. Peter’s research and teaching interests include boundaries in professional practice, harm in therapy, power, and anti-oppressive training.
