RTO destroys VOC’s increasing gases temperature above 800 ºC during 0,8 second, at least. Flow rate of gases is usually so high, as a consequence, energy consumption is a key issue.
Ceramic media has the heat exchange and storage role (see previous video 1/5). Hot gases leaving equipment give heat to ceramic media to storage it. After a period of time (60-120 seconds), this capacity has decreased. It is the time to change the canister use. Outlet and hot canister are now changed to inlet role. Gases to be treated receive hot previously stored, reaching combustion chamber at temperature very closed to processing temperature. Decreasing dramatically required energy for performance. By this way, fuel consumption is very low or inexistent (see next video 3/5 self-sustained point).
Hot Gases, as explained before, give heat to ceramic media inside of canister playing outlet role.
This performance is a constant cycle of giving/receiving heat in inlet/outlet working for each canister controlled by valves with the aim to minimize fuel consumption.
Additionally, some RTOs has a third canister role called “purge”. Some gases at inlet ceramic media have not arrived to combustion chamber, and a consequence contains VOCs not treated. In a cycle change, this VOC can be pushed to chimney, giving an emission peak. Purge avoid it, rinsing canister with clean air.
