"The idea was to pick different cars that represented the unique engineering or design or even their just historical importance in terms of automotive design. 11. SOUNDBITE (English) Ian Kelleher, Car Specialist, Sotheby's :
"She bought the Porsche. It was originally dove grey. And, I think, being Janis she decided to make it hers. And, she went to one of her roadies, Dave Richards, and told him to just kinda go wild and paint it. And it came back with this psychedelic paint scheme. There is imagery of magic mushrooms on it, Big Brother an d the Holding Company on one corner. It's really a work of art but it's something that makes you smile. It's a car that basically provides an emotion. It forces an emotional response much like her music. Much like who she was as a person and as a performer."

STORYLINE:
RM Sotheby's is offering several ground breaking luxury cars at auction in December that include a psychedelically painted Porsche once owned by singer Janis Joplin and a 1956 Ferrari 290 MM, one of the most valuable automobiles ever offered at public auction.
The Janis Joplin 1964 Porsche 356 C 1600 SC Cabriolet is estimated to bring $400,000 - $600,000.
Originally dove grey, Joplin asked one of her roadies to "go wild and paint it," according to Sotheby's car specialist, Ian Kelleher.
"It came back with this psychedelic paint scheme. There is imagery of magic mushrooms on it, Big Brother and the Holding Company on one corner. It's really a work of art but it's something that makes you smile," Kelleher said.
The 1956 Ferrari 290 MM by Scaglietti, is expected to sell for more than $28 million.
Kelleher called it Sotheby's "highlight car."
"It is in the very upper echelon of sport racing Ferrari's," Kelleher said, "It retains the original chassis. The original engine. The original body work."
The so-called 'Driven by Disruption' sale at Sotheby's Manhattan headquarters will represent ground breaking engineering and automotive design.
Over 31 luxury vehicles will be sold December 10th at 7pm.
