Unsung Heroes of Soul is about the unique collaboration of
people who created the music known as the “Sound of
Philadelphia,” not necessarily the recording artist, but the writers,
musicians and producers. This documentary highlights the people
who made the music and made the recordings that sounded the
way they did. These individuals were on the production side of the
business, the producers, the writers, musicians, arrangers, and
recording engineers. I also want to enlighten the viewers on the
cross-cultural and cross generational aspects of the music. It is
said “that behind every great record label there’s an equally great
house band.” Stax records had Booker T and the MG’s, Motown
records had the Funk Brothers and MFSB was the 40 piece
house band at Philadelphia International Records. These
musicians were responsible for a myriad of hits of label’s roster.
They were from a broad mix of ethnicities and age groups who
collaborated to create “The Sound of Philadelphia”.
At Philadelphia International there was no generation gap. All age
groups were captured by the music, teenagers as well as seniors.
Because of MFSB’s musical arrangement and style, where a
modern beat was fused with the elements of Blues, Jazz, R&B
and gospel and the strings also supplied the Classical influence,
which you will hear more about in the film.
