These Orcas Are So Different They Might Be New Species

A marine biologist explores the radically different types of orcas and their unique appearances, hunting strategies, and cultures. These differences are so profound that several types of killer whales may be different subspecies, or possibly even species.

Long believed to be one species, Orcinus orca, there are at least 10 officially recognized variations known as ecotypes. Some argue that there could be as many as 20 orca ecotypes. Ecotypes are broadly defined as a population of a species that survives as a distinct group through environmental selection and isolation.

Why should we classify orcas into different subspecies or even species? If we treat orcas as one global species, then they are data deficient with no obvious threat. But if we look at them individually, a much clearer picture comes into focus. Some ecotypes, like the Bigg’s and the Gerlache orcas are doing great and their populations are healthy and stable. Others are struggling for specific reasons. Pack ice killer whales are in decline because of habitat loss thanks to global warming. The Iberian orcas are at a higher risk of ship and vessel strikes because of their dangerous interactions with humans. And there is a very real fear that the southern resident killer whales will go extinct within my lifetime because their preferred prey, Chinook salmon, is also critically endangered.
