The attainment gap in England has widened over the pandemic. Tutoring is an unusually effective intervention for driving pupil academic progress. It’s also generally popular with parents and politicians. If properly directed at disadvantaged students, it could close the attainment gap. However, the mixed success of The National Tutoring Programme in the past two years suggests that this plan may not be as straightforward as it seems. Following the launch of CfEY's new report, ‘Levelling Up Tutoring’, this panel discussion at the Festival of Education 2022 considered whether tutoring really can close the attainment gap and, if it can, what policymakers, schools and others need to do to realise this ambition.
