The Georgetown Hoyas defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers 72-55 in the Big East tournament semifinals at Madison Square Garden. The Hoyas got a monster performance by Roy Hibbert (25 pts, 13 rebs) to deliver the victory.
The game turned early when the Mountaineers' Jamie Smalligan picked up two early fouls and had to sit. Without another big body to deal with Hibbert, the Hoyas built a 33-21 halftime lead, which grew to 15 points early in the second half.
West Virginia was able to mount a gradual comeback, outscoring Georgetown 26-15 over the next 8 minutes of the game to close with four pts, 51-47. But the Hoyas then ran off 16 straight points to take a 20-pt lead and put the game away.
In addition to the stat line above, Hibbert also made a 3FG from the top of the key, his third and final career 3FG on as many attempts. Jessie Sapp added 13 pts, and Jonathan Wallace and DaJuan Summers each scored 9 pts.
West Virginia was lead by De'Sean Butler (15 pts), Joe Alexander (12 pts) and Alex Ruoff (12 pts).
