Antioxidants combat free radicals, which are electrons that have detached from an atom. Free radicals have been linked to a variety of health problems, ranging from cancer to premature ageing.
Vitamin E supplements may help prevent coronary heart disease, boost immune function, reduce inflammation, improve eye health, and lower cancer risk. The research on these benefits, however, is mixed, and vitamin E supplementation is not appropriate for everyone.
Vitamin E (natural form) has a recommended daily allowance (RDA) of 15 mg for adults (22.4 units). Vitamin E is currently dosed primarily in international units, which measure biological activity rather than quantity.
Synthetic vitamin E supplements are only half as active as the natural form labelled as "D-" or "d-alpha-tocopherol" in terms of weight in mg.
