One of the ‘secrets’ of this basspart is playing the third note in the main groove short (staccato) as for instance in bar 1.

And I really like the slide in bar 8 (and similar bars) where Colin slides downwards from D to D# on the next string. Usually a slide towards a higher note is a slide upwards, but he choose to play a downward slide while the next note is a half note higher. Really nice!

Colin Greenwood sticks to the main groove most of the time, but he makes some nice variations as in bar 12 (playing eight notes on the 3rd and 4th beat; playing a hammer on in bar 22; a pull off in bar 27. And a nice detail is that in bars 28-31 he repeats these eight notes on the 3rd and 4th beat before playing a whole note in bar 32. Talking about building a bassline 😊

I play this song on a Fender Jazz bass with roundwound strings. Standard E-A-D-G tuning. No effects used except a bit compression and a preamp. Don’t forget to tune your bass a little bit higher (A4 = 444 Hz).

PS: I made a mistake at the beginning of this video. The date of this album is 1993 and not 1983. Sorry!
