Out of the six railroads that made up the government reorganizations of Northeast railroading in 1976, the two largest components were the Penn Central and the Erie Lackawanna. The problems Penn Central had were voluminous, and unfortunately knocked the rest of the railroads involved into their death throws. The Erie Lackawanna suffered through many downturns but actually bounced back and made money for a brief period in the 70s. EL had an enemy that was too big to fight; Mother Nature. The disaster of Hurricane Agnes in 1972, and a later disaster in 1975 were just too much. Coupled with all of the other burdens of its future partners, El surrendered as well. Today, a look at the two biggest Fallen Flag railroads that anchored the Conrail system.
