I bought this Schwinn AL Comp in November of 2021 with the intent of modifying it for use as a winter road bike. That plan did not come to complete fruition. I upgraded the AL Comp with mudguards, Goodyear mountain bike tires, and a few other parts to make it more suited for riding on muddy, slushy roads. However, I only rode it a handful of times due to a variety of factors, mostly weather. The irony is not lost on me.
So, my Plan B for the AL Comp is to upgrade a few items on it such as the drivetrain, fork and headset, and use it for a loaner mountain bike. The first step in this process is to replace the 3X crankset with a Shimano Alivio 2X crankset with 22 and 36 tooth chainrings. I chose to go this route because I already owned the crankset. This is an easy and effective upgrade.
