The Three Act Structure...EXPLAINED

The three-act structure is one of the 7 plot structures that are used to create a story. When you’re learning how to write a story, structuring your plot makes your story cohesive. It will also shorten the time of completing a story. But there are six other structures: Freytag’s pyramid, The Hero’s journey. Dan Harmon’s the story circle, Fichtean curve, Save the cat beat sheet, and The Seven Point story structure.
The three-act structure originated with Aristotle. He wrote in his book poetics that a tragedy must have a beginning, middle, and end. He split plot into two parts. Complication and unraveling. Complication is the problem. And unraveling is the problem resolved. In modern times we have expanded the three act structure, adding plot points, midpoints, inciting incident, and so forth. It’s used in screenplays, but it’s also used extensively in novel writing it’s the most popular structure used because of its simplicity.
Syd Field is famously known for modernizing the three-act structure, also Michael Hauge. Although Syd Field and Michael Hauge are screenplay lecturers, they made the three-act structure a paradigm in narrative fiction on screen and off.
