🏞️ Origins & Early Discovery

The caves were first discovered in October 1819 by a former Napoleonic soldier (often referred to as "sergent Caoulès")

In 1836, the caves drew scientific interest when professor Mermet and later three members from the Pau Alpine Club (Larry, Campan, and Ritter) explored them further .

Development & Public Access

In 1900, artist‑photographer Léon Ross embarked on ambitious work to make the caves accessible: building paths, electrifying them by creating a small hydro‑electric plant on the Gave de Pau, and constructing a bridge for improved access

On June 25, 1901, Ross received an 18‑year lease from local authorities to operate and transform the caves under public use .

They officially opened to the public in 1903, becoming one of the earliest show caves in France..

The caves extend about 2.8 km and span five superposed levels, featuring dramatic galleries shaped over millennia along an underground river
Guide to Europe.
Visitors walk through a variety of decorated chambers (e.g. Bassin des Naïades, Salle des Lustres, the Gouffre) before descending 80 m to the riverbed, taking a boat ride and exiting via train—a unique route through the mountain.
