I was thinking about how I might add some additional phrase-by-phrase tune training to my ABC Transcription Tools and in the process found that Robert Hickman had already written this one at:
https://pureocarinas.com/play_by_ear/...
This tool breaks ABC files down into phrases (one measure or longer, you can set it from the "Phrase Length" control) and then plays the tune phrase-by-phrase, listening and evaluating your performance before moving on to the next phrase.
Recently Robert adding instrument range presets for:
Tin whistle (high and low)
Fiddle
Mandolin
For button box or concertina, use the Fiddle preset.
Instruments that are an octave lower than the fiddle, such as tenor banjo or bouzouki, are not supported.
These set the range of the pitch recognition, so you'll want to select the option that best matches the range of your instrument.
Additionally, in the tool's settings (click the gear icon), you can choose whether the phrases are split by notes based on the meter or split aligned on barlines in the ABC.
I prefer the bar aligned options as in my experience of using the tool, it moves any partial pickup notes before the first full bar of music into it's own block that can easily be skipped during training.
In the tune trainer itself, I found it best to use the "Play after" mode where it plays the phrase, then you play it, it evaluates your performance, and if you made too many mistakes (accuracy threshold percentage can be set) it continues to replay the phrase until you get it right.
