In this live concert, Gypsy jazz icons Stochelo and Mozes Rosenberg offer a fresh reinterpretation of Charlie Chaplin's film scores. Developed in collaboration with Michael Chaplin, son of the legendary British actor and director, the project shines a light on the significance of Chaplin’s original compositions. Influenced by classical composers and enriched by a variety of cultures, the pieces are closely tied to the different eras of Chaplin’s career, spanning both silent and sound films. The Rosenberg Trio’s interpretations reveal the influence of Romani culture on the creator of Modern Times and Limelight.

A theatrical presentation of this exciting project, the trio’s set at the Jazz à Marciac festival goes beyond Chaplin's best-known melodies to uncover some hidden gems. One highlight is a piece originally written for The Great Dictator but ultimately cut from the final film – and therefore never heard by the public. This graceful, lyrical gem is complemented by other transcriptions and original compositions by the Rosenberg brothers. Refusing to be confined by the dominant culture – as illustrated by Stochelo’s remarkable version of “Chega de Saudade,” João Gilberto's seminal bossa nova – the family duo, joined by double bassist Matheus Nicolaiewsky, affirm their enduring fascination with cinema. A brilliant example is their rendition of a piece from Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, based on a score by the great Nino Rota.
