How does a Lacanian approach open up new perspectives of melancholia? While noting the elegance of Freud's account - which focuses largely on the role of a previously loved yet subsequently hared and internalized lost object - we highlight also a series of distinctively Lacanian angles on melancholia. The first of these - drawn from the work of Russell Grigg - argues that it is the presence of the object rather than its absence which matters in melancholia. A second, involves grappling with a distinctively Lacanian account of the death drive as both 'life in excess of life' and the wish to break from - or destroy - a network of given symbolic roles, debts, obligations that structure social existence.
