I am hanging out in a warm hotel and playing harmonica! Playing an Ab diatonic in second position. Trying out some different scales, going from blues scale to whole tone (I fail) so I move on to lydian dominant instead. The lydian dominant scale is really one of my favorite jazz scales. It it like the glue of jazz, it really combines melodies and lines in a very nice sounding way. The scale is basically a lydian scale but with a minor seventh note. Lydian dominant is also called Mixolydian #11, just a different name. So you can also think a mixolydian scale with a sharp 4 = written #11. The scale degree 11 is same as 4 in music theory (but one octave higher, maybe it should be called Mixolydian #4 then, but that is not common, Mixolydian #11 is more common). This scales comes from the fifth step of jazz melodic minor.
Tabs for this scale is (in 2nd position)
2D 3D’’ 3D 4D’ 4D 5B 5D 6B - 6B 6D 7D 7D’ 8D 8B 9D 9B
Note names in G:
G A B C# D E F (G)
But I am playing in Eb on this clip so,
Eb F G A Bb C Db (Eb)
Ah love music theory!
Best,
Filip
