Segment features on the ABC's Stateline Victoria: 'Locals may lose services due to Fast Rail Project', broadcast date 11 June 2004. This story highlights concerns about the alterations to the Bendigo Line due to the Regional Fast Rail Project by the Bracks Labor Government in the mid 2000's.
The Bendigo (Sandhurst) Line opened in 1862 and was built to high standard with double track (operational shortly after) and bluestone bridges for the length of the line, now heritage listed. The Regional Fast Rail project saw line speeds increased to 160km/h but large sections of the line past Kyneton singled to allow additional clearance to these structures.
Comment from the Victorian Government in this story was from then-Transport Minister Peter Batchelor, Member for the Electoral District of Thomastown.
