BRITISH FOLKLORE - The Boggart of Godley Green 👻 - Legends of Longdendale - Polterhikes

I'm back with another Legend of Longdendale! This time it's the 'Boggart of Godley Green'.
This piece of local folklore is the story of a particularly active Boggart, named Old Nanny, that the locals knew all too well! Join me on a walk around the Green and we'll take a look at the countryside whilst I tell you a spooky tale...

I'll get the odd explanation out of the way now. If you look up Godley on Google maps (or whichever you prefer) you'd see that Godley is part of Greater Manchester. But Godley, before it was attached to Tameside, or Manchester... was once part of Longdendale. Now, of course, you would think of Longdendale as part of the Peak District National Park. But we're looking at 1906 here, so almost 50 years before the 'Peak District' was declared a thing!
Godley Green is now classed a smaller part of the town of Hyde (in Tameside) but the 'Green' is itself a smaller part of the village, that consists of a lot of open green space with small pockets of woodland and ponds. Looking back 120 years or more, when Thomas Middleton (the author of the book I mention in this video) lived nearby to Godley and collected these stories, it was probably a very different place. Much more open... more working farmland, more woodland, more spooky maybe :-D
Unfortunately a chunk of the old farmhouses have been lost over time, some of them quite recently before anybody cared enough to realise how precious they would soon be! But there are still a few very old spots here and there, with some of the houses and farms dating back to the 1600s - 1800s. Most of them have been added to at some point but there are remnants throughout.

Unfortunately, the green has recently been 'selected' for a large housing development to be built over it's entirety, being not-ironically named; Godley Green Garden Village... so before the bulldozers arrive and the woodland gets the chop, I decided to make this long-put-off set of videos based on the legends within this small haven. So here's part one of 'The Ghosts of Godley Green'. I hope you enjoy it!
