In a small community in the Leiria region, two former nuns have discovered this kind of gentle farming for themselves. In the garden of Margarida Monteiro and Eduarda Barbosa, the vegetables do not grow in rows. In September, beans, pumpkins and cabbage thrive among grasses and herbs.

With the yields of their harvest, they feed themselves, but also friends. Beans, home-baked bread and cabbage are made into traditional migas. Pumpkin and moon beans are the basis for a hearty stew. Their own figs and apples refine an autumnal walnut cake.
