Although the Russian composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943) is most famous for his highly emotional Piano concerto's, he also composed highly playful and elegant pieces such as his piano transcription of the well-known hit “Liebesleid” by his friend Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962). Rachmaninov wrote this piano transcription in 1921 when he just had left Russia due to the rise of Bolshevism. He was living in New York at the time, where he encountered a totally different culture and emerging musical styles such as jazz. As one of the best pianists of his generation, he often collaborated with Austrian violinist Fritz Kreisler, who in turn was considered the best violinist of his generation. Both top musicians became friends, and as befits good friends, they exchanged gifts such as Rachmaninov's virtuoso piano transcription of Kreisler's best-known composition “Liebesleid”.
