"Starting an imaginary animal real estate agency: Experimenting with art for social science communication"

Abstract:

This talk will explore - without having all the answers! - how we can use creative approaches to science communication. Eva conducts research regarding how children, young people and families deal with trauma and adversity. In addition, she has been involved in global science leadership programs and initiatives contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Wanting to engage a broader audience in reflection on research findings and project topics, she started to experiment with visual arts approaches. Jonathan has many decades of experience in research development and has seen several inspiring art-science projects and collaborations. He is also finalising his PhD on crowdfunding for researchers. Eva and Jonathan will share examples from small and big art projects past and present, and talk about some of the practical approaches for making them happen. This will be an interactive session to stimulate conversation about creative opportunities for science communication.

Associate Professor Eva Alisic conducts research regarding how children, young people and families deal with trauma and adversity. In addition, she has been involved in global science leadership programs and initiatives contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.


Jonathan O'Donnell helps people get funding for their research. To be specific, he helps the people in the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne in Australia (all opinions are his own). He has been doing that, on and off, since the 1990's (with varying degrees of success). He loves his job. He loves it so much that he has enrolled in a PhD to look at crowdfunding for research. With Tseen Khoo, he runs the Research Whisperer blog and @ResearchWhisper Twitter stream, about doing research in academia.
