Clatteringshaws Dam is a monumental feat of 1930s engineering, anchoring the Galloway Hydro-Electric Power Scheme in southwest Scotland.
Completed in 1934, this gravity dam spans 457 metres across the River Dee, curving gently for aesthetic impact and structural integrity. Built from mass concrete, it rises approximately 23 metres above ground level and features a central spillway section with voided arches for water flow. Designed by James Williamson with consulting engineers Sir Alexander Gibb and Merz & McLellan, it was part of Stage I of Scotland’s pioneering hydroelectric initiative.
The dam creates Clatteringshaws Loch, feeding water through a tunnel to Glenlee Power Station. It’s not just an industrial landmark—it’s also a gateway to Galloway Forest Park, offering dramatic views toward Cairnsmore of Fleet and serving as a hub for geology enthusiasts thanks to its nearby quarry, a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Listed as a Category B building, Clatteringshaws Dam blends function, form, and heritage, symbolising Scotland’s early embrace of renewable energy and landscape-sensitive design
