Sir Keir Starmer is being criticised for warmly welcoming the return to the UK of British-Egyptian activist Alaa Abd El-Fattah, who had been detained in Egypt since 2019.
Starmer said he was “delighted” Abd El-Fattah was back with his family, and senior ministers shared similar messages. But Conservative shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick said this was poor judgment, pointing to old social media posts by Abd El-Fattah that he claims show “extremist” views about violence, Jews, and the police.
Abd El-Fattah was jailed for five years in Egypt for “spreading false news.” UN investigators said his detention broke international law. He was released in September after being pardoned by Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
