Do you ever feel like nothing you do is good enough? Do you set impossibly high standards for yourself, only to beat yourself up when you inevitably fall short? If you relate, you might be a perfectionist.
The cognitive model of behavior helps us understand that we can overcome our perfectionism by gradually desensitizing ourselves to the very things we fear. Whether it's the fear of judgment or the fear of not meeting expectations, we can face our fears head-on and come out the other side stronger and more resilient.
Here are some simple things you can do to start exposing yourself to low-risk opportunities for growth:
– Go for a walk without a map and challenge yourself to find your way home (and have your phone on you for if you really do get lost!).
– Press 'send' on that email without reading it multiple times.
– Say ‘Yes’ before you’re ready.
– Try a new hobby or skill that you've always been interested in, but too scared to try.
These might seem like small steps, but they can have a big impact on your confidence and self-worth. Start small and slowly expand your comfort zone - you might just surprise yourself!
