This was the first gig for The Clash after a sustained recording process for their debut album, which would be released just under a month later, and for the White Riot single, that would be released in less than week from this recording.
This was the last gig for Terry "Tory Crimes" Chimes until he would reappear with the band at Asbury Park, New Jersey on May 29th 1982. At this point in the band's history he re-joined for this gig after leaving at the end of '76, with Rob Harper stepping in for the New Year's gig at The Roxy.
This gig was a big statement moment for the band, they debuted new songs and their new clothing style that they'd use throughout 1977, it was a watershed moment for them. it was when they stopped being 1976 Clash properly, they showcased the "new" Clash at this gig, and it was a big deal at the time.
A lot of the songs here feel like they're trying to replicate the LP, certainly much more like the album versions than future live arrangements of many of the songs.
I couldn't find recordings of Janie Jones, Career Opportunities, or a full 1-2 Crush On You from this gig, although I suspect that recordings do exist. There has been new video footage from this gig, mainly 1-2 Crush On You, appearing on YouTube on recent months, so that's certainly worth finding for any Clash fan.
Don Letts filmed White Riot from this gig for the Punk Rock Movie, which is a fantastic piece of video and has been in circulation for many many years.
