How to make an Irish Apple Tart Recipe
Irish Apple Tart
Timings.
• Prep Time: 15 mins.
• Cooking Time: 30 mins
• Total Time: 45 mins.
Servings. 10 Slices
Ingredients.
For the Rich Shortcrust Pastry.
• 1 ¾ cup (300g//10 ½ oz) Plain Flour
• 3 tsp Baking Powder.
• 1 cup (250g/9 oz) Butter, frozen and grated.
• ¼ cup (60g/2 oz) Sugar.
• 1 Medium Egg.
• 1 tbsp Milk, to glaze
For the Apple Tart Filling.
• 3 Cooking Apples (Bramley, Granny Smith - 900g/32 oz when peeled and cores removed).
• ½ tsp Cinnamon.
• ½ cup (125g/4½ oz) Caster Sugar.
• 1 tbsp Water.
Serve with.
• 1 cup (250ml/8.45 fl oz) Double/Single/Whipping Cream.
Oven Temperatures.
Preheat the oven:
• Fan Oven: 180°C/360°F.
• Oven: 200°C/400°F.
• Gas Mark 6.
Method.
1. Place the flour, baking powder and grated butter into a bowl and rub the butter into the flour until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.
2. Add in the sugar and mix it in.
3. Beat an egg and add to the mixture.
4. Using a fork mix in the egg and bring the pastry together.
I find that using my hands is a quick way of getting the pastry into a ball.
5. Wrap the pastry in cling wrap and place it in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
6. Peel and chop the apples into cubes and place in a saucepan with cinnamon, sugar and water. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes. 7. 7. Allow to cool.
8. Lightly grease an ovenproof 8-inch plate with butter or margarine.
9. Preheat the oven to the above temperatures.
10. Sprinkle flour on the work surface and cut the pastry in half.
11. Roll out half the pastry till it’s the size of the plate.
12. Place the pastry on the plate, and press it down.
13. Add the cooled apple tart filling to the centre of the pastry and spread it out leaving the outer edge free.
14. Brush the outside of the pastry with a little milk.
15. Roll the other half of the pastry and place it over the top of the apples.
16. Gently press down the pastry to seal the edges.
17. Using a fork press down on the edge of the pastry, all the way around the tart. If you dip the fork in cold water this will prevent the fork from sticking to the pastry.
18. Cut a cross in the centre of the tart, this helps release the steam from the tart.
19. Using a knife cut off the excess pastry from the side of the tart.
20. Bush the top of the apple tart with milk.
21. Decorate the top of the pie with leftover pastry.
22. Again brush the pastry decorations with milk.
23. Bake in a preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden in colour.
24. When baked, remove from the oven and cool for 30 minutes before serving.
25. Serve with freshly whipped cream.
