About the Author:
Lewis Carroll (1832-1898): Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English author, poet, mathematician and photographer. He is famous for Children's Literature. His most notable works are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and its sequel Through the Looking Glass (1871). He was noted for his wordplay, logic and fantasy.


"Down the Rabbit-Hole" is the first chapter of Lewis Carroll's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, in which a bored young girl named Alice follows an unusual White Rabbit into a fantastical, nonsensical underground world.

Summary of the chapter:
While sitting with her sister by a river, Alice sees a White Rabbit wearing a waistcoat and holding a pocket watch. The rabbit, exclaiming that he is late, runs into a large rabbit hole. Alice, overcome with curiosity, follows him without thinking of how she will get out.
Alice falls down the hole for a long time, passing strange objects like shelves and cupboards on her way down. During her descent, she talks to herself, imagines conversations with her cat, and wonders if she will fall all the way to the other side of the Earth.
After landing gently, Alice finds herself in a long hall lined with locked doors of varying sizes. A small, three-legged glass table in the center holds a tiny golden key. She finds a tiny curtain hiding a small door, which the golden key unlocks.
Through the small door, Alice sees a beautiful garden but realizes she is far too big to fit through the opening. She returns to the glass table and finds a bottle labeled "DRINK ME." After drinking its contents, she shrinks to a very small size.
Now the right size to enter the door, Alice realizes she has left the key on the tabletop, which is now high above her reach. Below the table, she finds a small cake marked "EAT ME." She eats it, hoping it will change her size again.
The chapter ends just as Alice finishes the cake, leaving her anxious about which way she will change and whether she will reach the beautiful garden.
