George Atemkeng | LECUDO CATERPILLARS PROJECT

Lebang, located in the Fontem Sub-Division of Cameroon, has a population of over 42,689. It is the largest of three Fondoms in the area and aims to construct an all-season motorable road to enhance connectivity and development. LECUDO-USA has led this initiative, emphasizing the need for global participation from Lebang indigenes. The Ngundeng-Ndungweh-Lekong-Mbindia-Azi-Ncho-Beyahii Road & Equipment Project is currently in its second phase, focusing on infrastructure improvements.

In 2020, a new leadership team was established to address challenges, including the anglophone crisis, and to promote healthcare and education. They prioritized road access, leading to the procurement of construction equipment to support self-reliant development. The project has successfully graded roads, installed culverts, and acquired heavy-duty machinery, funded by over $230,582 raised from the community.

Despite successes, challenges remain, including a lack of coordinated long-term vision and ineffective governance within LECUDO. Leadership development is crucial for sustainability, as is establishing clear policies for accountability. The goal is to empower the community to manage its infrastructure, ensuring long-term benefits and financial self-sufficiency. The concept of Sustainable Community Development emphasizes that equipping communities to manage their own resources fosters lasting improvements.
