The Sanctuary House in Palo Alto, designed by Feldman Architecture, is a modern retreat created for a couple approaching retirement. The property’s lush, hidden garden inspired the home's design, emphasizing harmony between architecture and landscape. Nestled behind a large heritage oak tree, the house incorporates multiple courtyards, creating a natural flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. Elevated on piers to protect the tree roots, the structure features board-formed concrete, cedar, and expansive glass, blurring boundaries with nature. The design includes a second-story rental unit, reflecting the owners' support for urban density, while spacious areas with retractable glass walls allow for gatherings. The landscape, designed by Ground Studio, is adorned with boulders, pavers, and diverse plantings, making the outdoor spaces the home's true focal point. Through natural materials and serene landscapes, The Sanctuary House embodies a peaceful, cohesive retreat that connects seamlessly with its surrounding environment.
