In this video, we explore Working Stress Design (WSD), also known as Allowable Stress Design (ASD), focusing on keeping the stresses in concrete and steel within permissible limits under service loads. Starting with the uncracked section of a beam, we use the modulus of rupture to predict cracking and derive equations for the transformed uncracked section, accounting for the varying properties of concrete and steel. Once cracking occurs, we transition to analyzing the cracked section and update the equations accordingly. We will also cover the differences between balanced, under-reinforced, and over-reinforced designs, and how each affects structural safety. Additionally, we'll discuss the analysis of singly reinforced beams and the allowable service load stresses for both concrete and steel. To reinforce these concepts, example problems will be solved for both rectangular and irregularly shaped beams.
