@NVHArchive –S1 Edwin Helm served first in the Atlantic with the Navy Armed Guard. The Armed Guard was a unit of Navy gunners assigned to Merchant Marine ships. With merchant ships being sunk all over the world at an alarming rate, the Armed Guard had the highest causality rate of any other Navy unit during WW II. Edwin went on to serve on an AKA, USS Virgo. They took the troops and the boats to get them to shore to several invasions in the Pacific War. Their captain was a gutsy guy who was the first ti volunteer for the dummy runs to pass in close to draw the enemy shore battery fire so our guys could spot their targets. The Helm family stories were enough to make this a good interview. In one story Edwin told of how his brother’s B-17 crew shot down a German jet.
