Kelley (K. J.) Day was a very successful business man and the Mayor of Pikeville from 1934 through 1937. He spent decades leading the fight to preserve the Breaks of the Big Sandy, the largest canyon east of the Mississippi River. He marshaled politicians, business leaders, and concerned citizens on both sides of the Kentucky/Virginia border to join the cause. He started out advocating for a National Park, but there were a lot of twists and turns along the way, and his campaign ultimately led to the establishment of the Breaks Interstate Park.
