On New Year’s Eve, I take a teen trapper out on the line for a real winter trapline check. This isn’t just a ride-along — it’s about learning every step of trapping the right way.
We check a series of marten traps, along with wolf snares and lynx and wolverine cubbies, talking through why sets are placed where they are, how to rebait properly, and what to look for when conditions start turning against you. Along the way, we successfully harvest a marten, an ermine, and a squirrel, turning each catch into a teaching moment.
As heavy snow moves in, we also face one of the hardest but most important decisions a trapper has to make — pulling part of the line that’s becoming too difficult and unsafe to check for the rest of the season. Knowing when to pull traps is just as important as knowing how to set them.
This video is about:
• Mentoring the next generation of trappers
• Ethical, responsible winter trapping
• Real-life decisions on a Northern BC trapline
• Respect for the land, the animals, and the work
