In this MPC seminar, Belachew Gebrewold discussed how desire, recognition, and historical legacies shape the choices of African migrants today.
Gebrewold argued that postcolonial African migration to the West is more than a search for safety or opportunity. He suggested that migration also arises from a mimetic desire for being—an aspiration for recognition achieved through imitation of the West: its lifestyles, beauty ideals, and both its soft and hard power—all under the long shadow of slavery, colonialism, and ongoing dominance. Finally, the speaker also reflected on what these dynamics mean for policy, culture, and belonging.
