Where words are not enough, music speaks. Performing at Benaroya Hall for the National Parks Fund benefit concert is still something that we can’t truly put into words. Yesterday, we both found ourselves weeping as we reflected on the tremendous amount of love and support that we felt from everybody in the audience on Wednesday.
When we started bringing our music to the mountains, we began by performing simple hymns that spoke to our hearts - hymns that were made more powerful by simply existing in the cool mountain air.
As we continued carrying our violin and piano into backcountry, the wilderness itself started to shape our music. Perched high on summit ridges, we began to discover the notes that were hidden in our hearts. Earlier this year, a melody was born on a ledge overlooking Mt. Rainier - a melody that would ultimately become the transition improvisation between Ashokan Farewell and Hallelujah.
Listening to our improvisation now, it is more clear what it is saying. It is the voice of two women who have literally carried their music to the most beautiful places in the world. It is the hope of a sunset, the sigh of a sunrise. It is the feeling we experience in that moment of silence after we perform in the mountains... an invisible whisper to the whole world for a day that includes all of us .... a thank you that isn't possible to say with words ❤️
