In this chapter, we shift focus to the engineering contractor behind the entire system — Energenic — the team that built the electrical backbone enabling Africa’s most advanced hybrid microgrid.

EPISODE OVERVIEW:

For a smart grid to function, it needs more than just batteries and generators — it needs world-class infrastructure at high voltage. At Rosebank Mall, Energenic designed and delivered the 11kV electrical backbone that allows seamless integration between grid power, dual-fuel generators, and the 6 MWh battery system.

Through precision engineering, Energenic implemented:
Transformers of 5 MVA, 2.5 MVA, and 1 MVA stepping power up to 11 kV
EPC inverters converting DC from batteries to grid-ready AC
Switchgear and protection systems for safety and resilience
A new NEC NER earthing system reducing fault levels by 90%
Fibre optic communication links enabling lightning-fast smart grid response
