208hp/290Nm Peugeot 208 Rally4 Car: 3-Cylinder Turbo Engine Sound & Crackles

Here's a video about the new 2020 Peugeot 208 rally car, developed for the renamed R2 class (Rally4) by Peugeot Sport in order to replace the victorious Peugeot 208 R2 which was first introduced in 2012. Since the launch of the new hierarchy of rally car's technical specifications in 2019, three classes of Group R were immediately renamed. R1, R2 and R5 became the technical standard for Rally5, Rally4 and Rally2 respectively. Rally1 cars would replace the existing World Rally Cars with new regulations in the 2022 WRC season, while the newly created Rally3, designed to cover the performance gap between Rally4 and Rally2, introduced a new ruleset of car for 2021.
Rally4 group regulations are carried forward from the 'old' R2 class, so this Peugeot 208 is still a front-wheel drive car and must keep the proportions and dimensions of the production car from which it derives (which should be the 208 with GT Line package) because the class doesn't allow any modification with wide-body kits etc. Compared to the previous 208 R2, which was powered by a 1.6-liter N/A 4-cylinder engine with 185hp and 190Nm of torque, the new 208 Rally4 has the 1.2-litre turbo 3-cylinder engine used on the new road car. Thanks to the addition of a bigger turbocharger, the max power output is around 208hp and 290 Nm of torque. The engine is linked to a 5-speed SADEV sequential gearbox. Minimum weight of the class is set to 1,080 kg.
Watch a couple of them in action around Castelletto Circuit, in Italy, during the 2021 Motors Rally Show by ACI Pavia. If track layout seems to be a bit strange from the video is because the rally was divided into two similar, yet slightly different, special stages: one was following the correct anticlockwise sense of Castelletto while the other was running clockwise, with the addition of some chicanes and alternative layout.
I'm honestly not a big fan of these 3-pots but we must take note of how these small engines are nowdays able to develop performance of all respect. Pretty interesting to hear how 'crackling' is its engine's 'Stage Map' (can we still call it anti-lag system?), compared to most of the current turbocharged rally cars. It's been since the old Citroën DS3 R3T that I haven't heard such loud backfires on a modern rally car.
