💬 Quella luce arancione è bellissima… ma quando ti acceca, il deserto sparisce.

🎬 EP26 — La corsa in cui rischiamo di perderci nel nulla

Stanotte il vento soffiava fortissimo contro il telone della tenda, ma la pesante copertura e il telaio dell’Hilux hanno retto benissimo e abbiamo dormito alla grande.
Anzi, era quasi piacevole restare dentro e ascoltare i fischi delle folate.

Non sarà stato così per gli altri campeggiatori con le tende a terra, che abbiamo visto prendere il volo come aquiloni.
A noi è capitato tante volte: quando soffia il vento, stare al coperto è un dono.

Lo sa bene anche il gatto della pasticceria di McGregor a Solitaire.
Possibile che i gatti, ovunque nel mondo, reagiscano allo stesso modo al vento?

Qui il vento è un vero protagonista, proprio come il sole.
Scava solchi nello sterrato e la strada cambia volto nel giro di poche ore, rendendo il transito molto più difficile.
La visibilità peggiora quando la sabbia viene spazzata via e noi siamo ormai diretti verso ovest ... finché il tramonto diventa così arancione da cancellare i confini tra terra e cielo.

Non è ancora buio, ma non si vede più nulla.
Basta un attimo per uscire di strada, e oggi di strada ne abbiamo ancora molta da fare.

La scarsa visibilità mi costringe ad andare avanti senza pause: se scende il vero buio, perderò completamente l’orientamento.
E dormire nel deserto, lontano da un punto protetto, non è un’opzione.

Per fortuna ci supera un’auto.

Chi è alla guida dev’essere abituato a queste condizioni — vista la velocità con cui corre.
Oppure sa anche lui che nel deserto, quando cala la luce, ci si perde in un attimo, e sta solo cercando di arrivare in un posto sicuro.

Nicola prende il volante e si mette alle calcagna di quell’auto che vola a 130 km/h sullo sterrato.
Se la perdiamo, restiamo bloccati nel nulla.
Dobbiamo almeno raggiungere il primo centro abitato.

Quando finalmente compaiono le luci di Swakopmund, è già notte.

Tiriamo un respiro di sollievo.

Sì: siamo proprio europei.

💬 That orange light is beautiful… but when it blinds you, the desert disappears.

🎬 EP26 — The moment we almost get lost in the middle of nowhere

Last night the wind was blowing violently against the tent’s canvas, but the heavy rooftop cover and the Hilux frame held up perfectly, and we slept wonderfully.

Inside, it was almost pleasant to hear the gusts whistling outside.
Not so for the campers with ground tents, which we saw lifted like kites.
It has happened to us many times: when the wind hits, being under a solid roof feels like a gift.

Even the cat at McGregor’s bakery in Solitaire seems to know this.
Maybe cats react to wind the same way everywhere in the world.

Here, the wind is as much a protagonist as the sun.
It carves the gravel tracks, reshapes the road in a matter of hours, and turns every kilometer into a challenge.
Visibility drops dramatically when the sand lifts and we keep heading west… until the sunset becomes so intensely orange that sky and ground merge into one.

It isn’t dark yet, but we can't see anything.
Just a moment of distraction and we get off the road — and we still had a long way to go.

Poor visibility forces me to push on without stopping:
if true darkness falls, I completely lose my sense of direction.
And sleeping in the desert, far from a protected area, is not an option.

Luckily, a car overtakes us.
Whoever is driving must have been used to these conditions — judging by the speed.
Or maybe he knows that in the desert, once the light drops, it becomes frighteningly easy to get lost, and he's racing toward safety.

Nicola takes the wheel and follows that car flying at 130 km/h on the gravel.
If we lose him, we are stuck out there.
We need to reach the nearest settlement.

When the lights of Swakopmund finally appear, night had already fallen.
We breathe a huge sigh of relief.

Yes: we truly are Europeans.
