In this video I tie a popular Nymph pattern but use materials that glow in the dark specifically for fishing at night or in low light conditions. During the winter of 2024 to 2025 and this autumn of 2025 I have been experimenting with glow in the dark materials to create fly patterns for night fishing for Carp but I'm sure these flies could be used for Trout and other fish where night fishing is allowed. The pattern could also be effective during the day, I am sure.
What was the motivation for fly fishing for Carp at night? Well there were several reasons really. I wanted to be able to go fly fishing during the evenings after work even after the nights had drawn in. Another reason was because I genuinely do not believe anyone else has thought of doing it or is doing it and therefore I wanted to try it and be the first to document the method(s).
I have had mixed success using dog kibble flies with no fluorescent materials on them under a headlamp and loosefeeding dog kibble, however the fish do get a little spooked by the lights unless on a very low setting or deliberately aimed slightly away from the area you are fishing. I then had better success adding fluorescent paints to the flies and using no lights on the water later on during that winter. I also then developed sub-surface fluorescent (Glow in the Dark) patterns and found these to be slightly more successful during the very early spring of 2025. Only the head of those flies had any fluorescent materials on them.
In the last few weeks I have acquired even more fluorescent (Glow in the Dark) materials and developed the pattern in this video. Last night (13/10/2025) I think I finally fine tuned the method beating my previous record of 3 fish in 3 hours and catching 6 fish in 3 hours proving the flies actually work.
The method I use is to suspend the Okey Dokey under a glow in the dark indicator (This will be featured in a future video) about 6 to 9 inches deep, charge with a high power UV 365nm lamp and cast amongst fish feeding on loose fed dog kibble. Another method is to apply glow in the dark paints to the dog kibble patterns I have already shown on the channel, the bright white or neutral paint on top, which glows a strong chartreuse in the dark, and apply some orange, magenta or red glow in the dark paint to the bottom of the fly. This also accounts for a few fish but not as many as the Okey Dokey.
As I write I have also tied traditional wet flies (at least in shape and form), bugs and Czech nymphs using the materials for use on the river. I have literally just returned from the first session trying out the bug and a "wet fly" on the dropper on 14/10/2025. I briefly hooked but lost a fish of unknown species and therefore on an unknown fly. Hopefully with more time under my belt I shall be able to report further on those results. The main reason I left the session was it was a little spooky over there tonight....
