Scores of people remain homeless in the conflict-stricken Majola village at Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape. The more than six decades-long conflict was reportedly triggered by stock theft in the early 1960s. has flared up again. Since 2021, violent attacks have killed 22 villagers, including two children. More than 50 households were torched, and close to 100 houses have been burnt to the ground. Women, children and the elderly fled into the surrounding forest to escape the violence.
