Spread Betting vs CFD Trading: What's the Difference? Are CFDs better than spread bets? In this video Mark, discusses the differences between spread betting and CFDs. It can be confusing when you see spread betting and CFDs because on the face of it they look very similar but there are some differences. OK.

Market Selection - this will be broadly the same with spread betting and CFDs
Time to Trade - basically the same
Costs - with spread betting you have the spread which is quite straightforward. CFD trading is a little bit different - you usually have narrower spreads but you get a commission on top as well. Both have overnight charges if you hold positions overnight.
Tax/Stamp - when buying normal shares you have stamp duty in the UK. When you purchase a CFD (contract for difference), you don't have to pay stamp duty. Likewise with spreadbets. But a spread bet is treated like a bet so there's no tax to pay. CFDs are subject to capital gains tax but you can offset losses against future gains.
Margin - very much similar; companies are constrained by legislation.
Pricing - with spread betting you have to deal with the price the provider is offering you
Fills - with DMA you can actually enter bids and offers on the exchange.
